parent-child attachment play
Parent-Child Attachment Play (PCAP)
PCAP is based on the latest attachment research and is an empowering early intervention for parents/carers with children aged 3-16. It is a play-based approach aimed at improving the parent-child relationship and attachment. When the parent-child relationship is working, helpful child behaviour generally follows and family life becomes more manageable and enjoyable.
This is a 10-step programme where the therapist works with the parent/carer on an individual or group basis with up to 6 adults. This will take place once a week, on the same day at the same time, and in the same confidential therapy space. The support usually takes 10-12 sessions although some families may require additional support.
The therapist will sensitively work with the parents/carers to model and share the main skills of PCAP through experiential sessions. Once parents/carers feel confident in the skills, they will begin a short weekly “You and Me” activity time at home with their child. Over time, these skills can be transferred to other areas of home life and parenting.
This intervention is ideal for parents/carers who are keen to develop existing bonds with their child or parents/carers of children with attachment difficulties. There is an option that this support can be delivered alongside a Play and Creative Arts Therapy intervention for your child.
